Contract Design and Stability in Matching Markets

چکیده

We develop a model of many-to-many matching with contracts which subsumes as special cases many-to-many matching markets and buyer-seller markets with heterogeneous and indivisible goods. In our setting, in contrast to results for the setting of many-to-one matching with contracts, preference substitutability is sufficient and necessary to guarantee the existence of a nonempty lattice of stable allocations. Several fundamental structural results, such as the rural hospitals theorem, extend to our setting. We apply these results to derive a novel condition on preferences, weaker than substitutability, that is sufficient for the existence of a lattice of stable allocations in the context of many-to-one matching with contracts; extensions of this condition yield rural hospitals and strategy-proofness results. We also develop a theory of language for many-tomany matching markets with contracts, and show a natural tradeoff between expressiveness and stability: bundling makes a contractual language less expressive, but encourages substitutability of agents’ preferences over contracts. Weighted Matching Markets with Budget Constraints

We investigate markets with a set of students on one side and a set of colleges on the other. A student and college can be linked by a weighted contract that defines the student’s wage, while a college’s budget for hiring students is limited. Stability is a crucial requirement for matching mechanisms to be applied in the real world. A standard stability requirement is coalitional stability, i.e...

Contract design and stability in many-to-many matching

We develop a model of many-to-many matching with contracts which subsumes as special cases many-to-many matching markets and buyer–seller markets with heterogeneous and indivisible goods. In our setting, substitutable preferences are sufficient to guarantee the existence of stable outcomes; moreover, in contrast to results for the setting of many-to-one matching with contracts, if any agent’s p...

Existence of Equilibrium in Large Matching Markets with Complementarities∗

In two-sided matching markets with contracts, the existence of stable outcomes can be guaranteed only under certain restrictions on preferences; the typical restriction is that all agents’ preferences are substitutable. We show that, in markets with a continuum of each type of agent, it is only necessary that agents on one side of the market have substitutable preferences to guarantee the exist...

Matching Markets: Design and Analysis

A market consists of buyers and sellers of some commodity, say a DVD movie. In this thesis, we assume the role of market operator. Our goal is to ensure that the market has certain desirable properties, including truthfulness, fairness and stability. We explore how to achieve these properties by designing rules for how the participants (buyers and sellers) can interact. We also explore how to e...

What price stability? Social welfare in matching markets

In two-sided matching markets, stability can be costly. We define social welfare functions for matching markets and use them to formulate a definition of the price of stability. We then show that it is common to find a price tag attached to stability, and that the price of stability can be substantial. Therefore, when choosing a matching mechanism, a social planner would be well advised to weig...
